This concept store mixes objects of design, lifestyle – and contemporary art. Thanks to a collaboration with the Réjane Louin Gallery in Locquirec, we discovered the artwork of Claire de Chavagnac! Her rhythm and colours sang out to me. I wanted to know more, so Yann, the store-owner, very kindly put us in contact.

Claire de Chavagnac receives us in her studio in Plestin-les-Grèves. It is a bright, airy space completely surrounded by vegetation which she designed and built herself. Naturally, the fact that that she is a trained architect doesn’t hurt! But we instantly understand from where the rigor and rhythm of her work originate.

    Shot with DXO ONE Camera

    Shot with DXO ONE Camera

This rhythm is the fruit of an artistic approach distinctive to the artist. During a move, Claire lost all of her personal belongings, visuals and photo albums. As a result, she decided to create her own “vocabulary of words” to fix her memories and emotions forever. A little like the cuneiform or elementary writing of childhood, composed mainly of vertical lines, aligned and superimposed in an order that obeys only the rules of the artist’s imagination, and which takes on the colours of the landscapes she discovers in her travels. The artist fixes her emotions in the form of sketches in a travel diary, an intimate diary where nothing escapes her. Everything is meticulously recorded through her illustrations, in a timeless visual memory. It’s about keeping track of the passage of time. Once back in her studio, she decides which subjects she wishes to develop further in her paintings.

    Claire dans son atelier

    Credits: @Chavagnac-Brugnon/ADAGP

Photo de droite: @Chavagnac-Brugnon/ADAGP

“From 2007, I no longer wanted to be tempted by mere representation, but to illustrate my emotional memory. My practice, since then, is a pure play of materials and non-identifiable symbols in a sensory evocation taken from my daily life. The painting is colour, light and music, object-references of a moment I have lived, an invitation to an “open” sensory experience for the viewer. If the canvas has a title, it’s in reference to the global space in the context of the experience I lived that motivated the work.”

Claire divides her time between Paris and Brittany, but not only. She has lived in the US and has travelled in China, Japan and India, her varied experiences in her travels nurture her creativity. Her latest trip was to Australia and the red landscape of the bush inspire her most recent works.

But it is waterscapes that invariably inspire and attract her. The sea must never be far away. Locquirec, Locquemeau, Toul-an-Hery, Beg-ar-Fry, these are places to which the artist is strongly attached. We understand it so well J, but let’s look at Claire’s interpretation of the ports of Locquirec and Locquémeau.

Nuit au port de Locquirec, 2010. And the depth of the blues and greens vary depending on the port. In fact, Claire has portrayed two completely different atmospheres, which are as much about the osmosis between the people as the places and the associated colours. Locquirec, a marina with white sand, deep green water, seduces by its light-hearted side, while Locquémeau, a fishing port with a deeper sea by its more serious maritime atmosphere.

    Locquirec

    Port de Locquirec

What is truly formidable is the artist’s ability to make us perceive a reality that corresponds to a specific moment in time through their sensitivity and interpretation.

Claire exhibits at the Réjane Louin gallery in Locquirec, at Arte Diem in Morlaix, and also in other galleries in Paris, and also even further afield, in a museum in Japan.
